WGRC Membership
The WGRC depends entirely upon community volunteers to plan and manage these programs. Unlike in many communities, no taxpayer money is used to provide these services. Without our dedicated members, these recreational opportunities would not exist.
There is no monetary cost to join - we ask only for some of your time. In return, you will receive the use of the WGRC campsite, including the heated, in-ground swimming pool, discounts on programs, the opportunity to make some good friends, and the satisfaction of knowing that you are doing something important for our kids!
What does membership involve?
Most of our members are active for 3-5 years. First year members are asked to participate on 2-3 committees, working with the committee chair and other members. Your level of participation depends on you and your schedule.
Members also attend a monthly general meeting, held at our campsite in the summer months and at the library in the winter. Babysitting is provided at all of our meetings. We also have several family-oriented social events throughout the year for members, including a summer campout, Halloween party, summer party, and Holiday party.

How does the Rec Council operate?
Programs are run by a series of committees, chaired by veteran members. We also have an Executive Board that handles administrative functions. Members sign up for committee assignments, assisting the chairmen. Committee activities are seasonal, depending upon its responsibilities. Presently our committees are:
- Day camp - Plan and organize summer day camp and before and after care programs. Hire and train staff, purchase equipment and materials for the camp program.
- Soccer - Coordinate instructional soccer programs. Recruit coaches, sponsors, and referees; schedule games; arrange picture day; order equipment and materials; set up and run the soccer tournament.
- Learn-to-Swim - Coordinate swimming instruction at the WGRC pool. Hire lifeguards and schedule swim program sessions.
- Summer athletics - Set up athletic programs including tennis, volleyball, golf, and baseball skills. Schedule sessions, arrange contracts, purchase equipment and materials.
- Winter athletics - Set up athletic programs including basketball and wrestling. Schedule sessions, arrange contracts, purchase equipment and materials.
- Campsite - In charge of maintaining and improving the camp facility. Includes arranging and scheduling of repairs and new construction projects.
- Pool - Responsible for opening, maintaining, and closing the swimming pool. Arrange inspections, ensure proper maintenance and chemical levels, identify equipment needs and arrange repairs.
- Fundraising - Plan annual reverse raffle, cookie dough fundraiser, and other fundraising events.
- Publicity - Produce and secure advertising for the WGRC Program Guide. Place WGRC news items and ads in local newspapers.
- Ways and means - Run the concession stand at the soccer tournament. Design and construct the WGRC 4th of July parade float.
- Membership - New member recruitment.
- Activities - Plan WGRC parties and group events.

I don't know anything about putting on sports programs. How could I help?
We need members with all types of skills and any amount of time available. Some of the things our members get involved with are: buying equipment and supplies; keeping the campsite and pool well-maintained; hiring and training coaches, counselors and referees; scheduling practices and games; organizing fundraising events; securing advertisers and sponsors; publishing the program guide; recruiting new members; assisting with registrations; handling billing and record keeping; maintaining the website; and planning group parties and events. There truly is a way for everyone to contribute.
I don't know if I have time for this.
Our members all have family, job, and other commitments. Some choose to be very active in the WGRC and others help out when they can. Your level of involvement would depend on you and your schedule. The more members we have participating at any level, the more we can spread out the workload and ensure that all of our programs can continue.
How do I join?
